- abstract
- The Dṛggaṇita of Parameśvara, the 14th-15th century astronomer of Kerala, which is published as the Volume 30 of the Vishveshvaranand Indological Research Series, is the basic text of the Dṛk system of astronomical computation followed in South-West India. Though numerous tracts based on the Dṛggaṇita are known and used, the basic text of the system had not hitherto been available and was considered to have been lost forever. However, a patient and diligent search for this work proved faithful and as many as five mutually independent manuscripts could be discovered. The present edition of the work is based on these five manuscripts.
- Description
- The Dṛggaṇita is a classic in the field of Indian astronomy. Revising the prevailing Parahita system of computation, Parameśvara of Vaṭaśreṇi (c. 1360-1455) came up with the Dṛk system, which was widely prevalent in the south-western coastal region of India. This work followed an observation of the skies and astronomical studies over fifty-five years. The text, consisting of two parts, is strictly astronomical and gives the methods for calculating the positions of planets.
