Practice of Architecture π
Architecture usually provide the process/means to render the craft. However, in artisanal practice like boat and ship building, sculpting with stones, metals involve designing as a process that provides a inkscape where ratios, scales, metrics interact with laborious process that involves sensory(seeing, hearing etc ...), cognitive(observing, thinking, flow...) and motor(hand, legs, tools... ) actions to bringout the desired outcome in the form of boat/ship, idols, jewels, etc...
Technology and tools involed in continuously changing practice, based on the needs either resonate or dissonate with the available text that provide the grammer in terms of geometries, ratios and scale. Interaction with the actual artisans helps us study and question the relevancy of grammer in actual creation process.
In the case of boat making, the hand drawn design over a large scribe wooden board, only becomes part of a complex process that involves carving third dimension out of wood, stone, and metal. From the choice of materials, tools and coordination until bringing out the desired piece of work (a funcitonal part of the ship), drawn abstract view only becomes part of the whole never taking any special place in the whole process.
